Workshop on “PCB Design”

Workshop on “PCB Design” conducted under IETE chapter of PHCET

A Workshop on “PCB Design” was conducted under IETE Student chapter for SE EXTC students. PCB Designing is one of most emerging field in Electronics in today’s era. For the students of Electrical, Electronics & Electronics & Communication engineering (EC) students, this is a good field to start their career. PCB designers are key persons in research and development (R&D), electronics production units as well as in the PCB industry.

Faculty member, Mr. Pratik Mhatre, started workshop with technical session. PCB Design Software “Dip trace” was explained to students. Following content were covered in workshop: (1) Schematic Design (2) Component Footprint Design (3) Integrated Library Design (4) PCB Design & Routing (5) Itching of PCB. In addition, a special visit was arranged in CNC PCB designing lab in which students got exposure to different advanced processes involved in industrial PCB manufacturing. Different processes in industrial PCB manufacturing like drilling on CNC, wandering and cutting, printing processes, etching process and CNC programming were explained and demonstrated. 25 students attended the workshop.

Survey Camp at Franav Farms, Apta
As per the stipulations of Mumbai University, for the successful completion of the course Surveying II, a survey camp needs to be conducted for the second year students. For the academic year 2019-20, the camp was conducted for S.E.-A at Franav Farms, Apta from 6th to 7th March, 2020 for S.E. A and from 13th to 14th March, 2020 for S.E.-B. A total of 131 students attended the camp who were divided into three groups of equal strength.

Workshop on “Arduino Programming”

Workshop on “Arduino Programming” conducted under IETE chapter

A Workshop on “Arduino Programming” was conducted under IETE Student chapter for TE EXTC students on 13th March, 2020.

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs – light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. Arduino boards are relatively inexpensive compared to other microcontroller platforms. Hence Arduino board can be used for prototyping microcontroller based projects to save time and money and are most popular nowadays.

The event started with “National Anthem” at 9:30 a.m. followed by detailed technical session by Mr. Upendra Patil. Students performed variety of tasks in the workshop and the hands session was very useful. Total 39 students participated in this event.

Training on “Solar PV System”
One Day Training on Solar PV System at Tata Power Skill Development Institute, Shahad

Department of Electrical Engineering organized a training programme in association with Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) Shahad on 7th March, 2020. Total 5 staff along with 4 students were present for training. The training was delivered by Mr. Mr. Hari S. Rohra & Mr. Bhandari, TPSDI, Shahad. Experts are having more than 35 years of industrial experience. The training consists of both theory and hands-on skills. They gave theory explanation at beginning of session.

The training session focuses on fundamentals of solar energy, wherein participants are briefed about fundamentals of solar radiation, solar geometry, solar noon, site survey and shadow analysis. The session also talked about different types of modules and cells. The participants gained initial practical experience on solar resource measurement and analysis, PV system configuration, and system designing.

Following Contents were discussed during the Training as follows:
1. In-depth knowledge of basics, various components of a photovoltaic power plant such as photovoltaic modules, inverters, charge controllers, batteries, switchyard, and so on.
2. Photovoltaic system types, Earthing in Solar PV, design philosophy, principles, examples and calculations.
3. Installation of a solar PV system.
4. Project management, economics and finance of projects, solar policies.
5. Demonstration of Floating Solar system, Thermal Solar System and Rooftop systems.
The participants gain an overall understanding of the fundamentals, design, management and existing policies relating to solar PV technology.

Zumba Dance Session

Pillai HOC College of Engineering and Technology had organized One Day Zumba Session on 6th March, 2020 for all female faculty members. The event was for keeping stress at bay and enable participants to handle the stress with fun.

The session was attended by about 40 enthusiastic female faculty members.

The session started with the zumba instructor performing the Zumba dance steps. Participants initially watched the dance steps demonstrated by the instructor and tried to follow the steps. It was a thrilling experience for everyone. The instructor used variety of rhythm and easy to follow steps to guide the participants. The instructor addressed the participants and encouraged everyone to perform with apt coordination and splendid zest.

All female participants described Zumba as more dance and fun activity than that benefits every age group. The purpose of the event was to indulge female faculty in physical activity and improve the quality of life.

The session lasted for an hour and came to an end with a motivational message by Dr. Lata Menon, Principal PHCASC and Dr. Madhumita Chatterjee. Dr. Lata Menon shared her thoughts on ‘Women Empowerment’ and Dr. Madhumita Chatterjee, Principal, PHCET encouraged female faculty to be practice physical activity for healthy life.

Expert Lecture on “Smart Grid Technologies and Applications”

The Expert Lecture on “Smart Grid Technology and Applications” was organized by Department of Electrical Engineering organized by Prof. Ms. Sanobar S. Third year and Final Year Electrical Engineering Students. It commenced at 11:00 a.m. on 5th March, 2020 in 1st Floor, Conclave-I. Prof. Ms. Tahoora Qureshi, Assistant professor and Expert for smart grid technologies was invited as resource person. She has 5 years of experience in teaching as an assistant professor in Electrical Engineering Department of Abdul Razak Kalsekar Engineering College, Panvel. She is also a Topper of “Introduction to Smart Gird Technologies” course, introduced by NPTEL.

Asst. Prof. Mr. Aamir Shaikh introduced the Guest speaker and Head of the Department, Ms. Pranita Chavan felicitated the speaker.

The speaker commenced the session with scenario of existing conventional grids and then introduced the smart gird and their comparison. She gave many case studies where smart grids are installed and they are being used making our lives more convenient and economical. While explaining the important applications of Smart Grid, she discussed smart devices such as Phase Measurement Units, Smart Sensors, and Smart Fault detecting Devices. She also discussed about the two way communication techniques and importance of Global Positioning System in it. The enthusiastic audience asked many questions and she answered all the question satisfactorily. Many interesting applications she suggested to the students that can be implanted as a final year projects.

The session was concluded with a question answer session at 1:00 p.m. More than 70 Students were present for the session. All the Students have given positive feedback and they were expecting more session like the same.

Stress Management Sessions
As an initiative under the WDC, Stress Management Sessions were conducted across all the seven departments in PHCET over a period of two months by our in house counsellor Ms. Jarvis Varghese Kallarakal for students and faculties.

The topics for the Stress Management Sessions were as follows:

2. Anger Management/li>
3. Planning and Organization/li>
4. Music Therapy/li>
5. Individual Problem Discussion
The participants agreed post event that the session had been extremely useful and helped them to relieve professional and personal stress. It was also agreed mutually to organize more such events to empower the faculty members in the near future.

Students from Third and final year mechanical engineering participated and appeared for exam. Dr. G. V. Patil sir gave necessary instructions to the students and Lab assistant Mr. Vijay Gharat made necessary arrangements. From CADD centre Pooja madam and Mr. Naresh Prajapati looked after exam question paper.

Prof. Sagar Patil, Prof. Pravin Dahalke and Prof. Swapnil Nawale coordinated the event.

Students of Third year and Final year mechanical engineering were happy to go through the exam and were benefited from this event.

National Kart Racing Championship – Starkers Motorsports

Starkers Motorsports is Official Motorsports Go-Karting team from Pillai HOC College of Engineering & Technology. This team participates in the motorsport events run at national level for students of engineering colleges by various organizers. Currently this team is working for its 4th event and consists of 45 students from various departments.

As an official team of PHCET, the team had organized various seminars on Go–Karting & IC Engines for student as well as organized workshop on Design & Manufacturing of F9 vehicle & vehicle maintenance for students. The recruitment for next team has also started. The new recruits will be trained by the current team for Designing & Manufacturing of kart as well as managing the team as a business.

Achievements:
Year – 2020

Team Starkers, participated in National Event’s (7th GKDC & 5th E-GKDC) at Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore. The team designed and manufactured two vehicles, Combustion vehicle (150 CC) Go-Kart as well as Electric Go-Kart for the competition.

Team STARKERS was the only team from Mumbai division to qualify and finish each event successfully in 6th season of Go-Kart Design challenge held at Buddh International Circuit, Noida.

Workshop on “Network Design using Cisco Packet Tracer”
A Workshop on “Network Design using Cisco Packet Tracer” was conducted on 28th February, 2020. Total 32 students attended this workshop. Dr. Mansi Subhedar, HOD of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering briefed about importance of network design and the need of the topic. She is also mentioned that the aim of the workshop is to improve student’s career prospects and get an edge over their counterparts in IT as Networking Industry is the backbone of any other industry.
