IIT Spoken Tutorial

Spoken Tutorial is an initiative of the “Talk to a Teacher” activity by the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) launched by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD), Government of India and is being developed by IIT Bombay. The objective of Spoken Tutorial is to spread the knowledge of technology and Free Open Source Software (FOSS) across the country to the one who lack access and opportunities to learn any software.

In Computer Engineering Department, we have included the course “C” for second year student and “Java” for third year student and have enrolled 154 and 140 students for particular course respectively. Since the same courses are available in the curriculum also it becomes beneficial for student to understand the concept in more detail. As an audio-video tutorial helps in explaining the activity performed on the computer by seeing and hearing someone explain a process greatly improves understanding. The learning method is highly beneficial for self-learning student as the audio content is available in most 22 Indian languages such as Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Telugu etc which overcome the language barrier in understanding the language. Due to Spoken Tutorial Project student are able to enrol in various programming languages, office tools, graphics and circuit design tools through audio video tutorials. Students are allowed to take online examinations and get certificates which are free of cost. Student will have various course certifications completed along with their UG Degree by the end of Degree course. This will make the student highly knowledgeable and confident enough to compete with the world.

Project Based Learning

Department of Computer Engineering has taken an initiative of “Project Based Learning“. In this, students have started working on the PBL scheme from second year onwards. Through PBL, the students will get an opportunity to explore their talent and skills to contribute to the society by giving their best and developing a system for the betterment of the society.

Also the students will get an opportunity to explore their skills learned during the previous years of hard work in the Engineering life. The students will learn 3 important lessons while working on these projects, the first one is the positive attitude development, second most thing is learning new tools for developing a system and the third most is the experience that the students will gain while working on such live projects. Currently we are having more than 100 students working in the Project Based Learning scheme. Students have developed various applications under PBL scheme such as Security Club and CSI Website.

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), a project funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), provides e-learning through online Web and Video courses in Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Management and Humanities. It has developed curriculum based video courses and web-based e-courses targeting students and faculty of institutions offering UG engineering programs.

In our department we have started “Programming in C++” course which is of 20 hours course for second year and third year students. More than 180 students have enrolled for the course. This course is free of cost. Prof. Partha Pratim Das form IIT Kharagpur is an online instructor. The present course builds up on the knowledge of C programming and basic data structure (array, list, stack, queue etc.) to create a strong familiarity. Besides the constructs, syntax and semantics of C++ (over C), we also focus on various idioms of C++ and attempt to go to depth with every C++ feature justifying and illustrating them with several examples and assignment problems. We illustrate various OOP concepts.

Certification courses are offered by NPTEL in association with industry partners like Aricent, NASSCOM and Google. On successful completion of the course, an in-person, proctored exam can be taken by paying a nominal fee. Those who pass the exam will be awarded with a certificate. This certificate will give additional credits during placements.
