Study Workshop and Remedial Classes

Remedial programs are designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s expected to know. Teachers help pupils to develop good learning habits and attitudes, such as complete the assignments tidily, keep their promises and be responsible and disciplined.

Objectives
The objectives of the remedial and tutorial committee are as follows:

  • To motivate and help the academically weaker students to realize their weakness and help them to improve on their fronts.
  • To enhance the academic skills of the students in various subjects.
  • To raise their level of comprehension of basic subjects to provide a deep understanding for further academic work.
  • To Strengthen their knowledge and skills in such subjects

In Pillai HOC College of Engineering and Technology, slow learners and underachievers are identified during regular lectures. Remedial classes are organized on Saturdays’ to meet the need of the weaker students. The Head and the Class – Coordinators of the department keeps a record of the academically poor students. The Principal regularly interacts with the parents.

After completion of each unit (per subject) last hour of the weekly allotted hours per subject is scheduled to be the remedial classes (if required). Answer scripts of the weekly test are discussed one to one with the students outside the usual class hours.

The subject faculty supervises students’ understanding and knowledge of the subject in the remedial class. Faculty divides the weaker students into groups and distribute the prepared study material and try to understand their problem areas. Special attention is paid to slow learners. Assignments are given to the students for more practice.

The process of mentoring is initiated as soon as the newly admitted students settle a bit. The Head of the Department allocates mentor for the respective semester. An interactive meeting is organized between Principal, Head of the Department and Mentor to discuss the students counselling process, issue, and streamline the objective as far as possible. The mentors then chart out their course of action. A Comprehensive timetable is prepared for their remedial classes.

Our practices of remedial classes

  • Students needing remedial classes are identified from each class.
  • The teacher looks into the academic, motivational and social adaptation pattern of the student.
  • If needed, performer students are placed in the group of the weaker students to help them
  • Record of progress and attendance is strictly maintained by the concerned Class-coordinators and mentor.
  • Study workshop and Experts talk is organized for the students by the respective departments to polish and enhance the understanding of the students on the subject.

Building Quality Consciousness Program

Bridge course is one of the initiations taken up by Pillai HOC College of Engineering and Technology (PHCET) to give students the confidence and skills for a successful transition from school to college. Bridge course for newly admitted students is conducted every year at the beginning of the first semester classes.

The main objective of the course is:

  • To bridge the gap between subjects studied at the Pre-university level and subjects they would be studying in Engineering.
  • To act as a buffer for the new entrants.
  • To focus on fostering a strong sense of ethical judgement and moral fortitude.
  • To promote applications based self-learning and intermingling of a large cross-section of students from different background
  • To promote active learning.

The orientation program is conducted by the respective department. At the beginning of the first semester, three days bridge course on ‘Application of Mathematics in Engineering’ is organized by Mathematics faculty collaborating with the other departments. The concepts that are essential prerequisites for engineering course are taught to the students.

PHCET invited Experts to talk to the students on various subjects, conduct orientations and Industrial visits for furnishing their social as well as the technical side of learning. Guest lectures on ‘Upcoming Emerging Technology’, ‘Plumbing Engineering New Concept for Smart Cities’ organized by the respective department helps in understanding the fundamentals of the Engineering subjects. The experts interact with the learners and students are able to co-relate themselves with the ideas presented and have a clear picture of self as well as of the vitally important soft skills for the rest of their lives.

Orientation to Computer Engineering students aims enabling them to write small programmes in C language which is a part of I year curriculum for all branches. Short-term training program on ‘Internet of Things’, ‘Ethical Hacking’, ‘Cyber Security’ deepens the understanding of the subject.

The students who underwent the bridge course have fared extremely well in Examinations and have appreciated the initiative. Series of Workshops on ‘Effective Problem Solving’ helps to enhance critical thinking and problem solving skills of the students. One day workshop on ‘Network Security’ and ‘Data Centre Technology’ and on ‘Building Quality Consciousness’ organized by the Information and Technology Department not only equipped students with the knowledge and confidence but was an eye-opener, but also left the students motivated towards the end of the session.
