  • Survey Project

    Survey Project

    As per the syllabus of Mumbai University for Second year Civil Engineering Degree Course, a Surveying Project work is to be carried out. The students are required to conduct the following projects and prepare detailed drawing sheets.

    1. Radial contouring
    2. Block contouring
    3. Longitudinal profiling and cross-sectioning of Roadwork

    For the academic year 2021-22, the survey project for students of Semester IV – A and B divisions was conducted in April 2022. The field work for Road project was carried out on 7th April, 2022 at Pillai HOCL Campus, Rasayani for a total length of 500m; while the Block contouring and Radial contouring projects were carried out at Franav Farms, Apta on 8th April, 2022. Initiation and discussions on preparing the four required drawing sheets was carried out on 12th April, 2022 at the college.

    Objectives:
    The survey camp was conducted with the following objectives:

    • To familiarise the students with the some of the surveying works conducted on site like contouring, profiling, cross-sectioning etc.
    • To instil the knowledge of taking observations with various surveying instruments like dumpy level, digital theodolite etc.
    • To train the student to process the field observations and obtain useful data.

    Outcomes:

    • Calculation of Reduced levels and horizontal distances of points along the radial lines from the staff readings observed during tacheometric survey. Identifying points of same RL and drawing the radial contour map of the region.
    • Obtaining the reduced levels pertaining to block contouring project using a dumpy level and to prepare the contour map of the area.
    • Alignment of Road on the selected area and deducting the reduced levels pertaining to centreline and two points each on either side of road project. Preparing road profile with Longitudinal sections and Cross sections showing existing ground level and formation level
    • Gain knowledge regarding various projects like contouring, profiling, cross-sectioning etc. and to prepare the necessary drawings like Longitudinal sections, Cross sections (Road project) and topographic contour maps of the selected region.

    Various topics were unfolded by the eminent speaker during the workshop. The following are some of the topics discussed in the session by the speaker:

    Contents:

    • Introduction about prolog.
    • Prolog in AI.
    • Rules and facts.
    • How to convert English to prolog facts using facts and rules?
    • Prolog examples.

    Event Outcome:

    The overall goal of this workshop was to introduce participants about the prolog logical language. Additionally, the workshop gave insight regarding the different rules and facts involved in the prolog. The participants were asked to perform the same on the online swish compiler so that they can understand the prolog language better. The workshop was very interesting and gave the opportunity to learn the prolog language.

    Event Feedback:

    The workshop was well attended by the third year students. We received a good response from the audience and also they gave very good feedback. All the concepts were explained clearly and understandably. At the end of the workshop, Prof. Rahul Kapse (Faculty Coordinator) thanked HoDs, Faculty members, Management and participants for their active support for making the programme successful.

    A hands-on Workshop on “Embedded System Design and Arduino Programming” Part – 1 was conducted by Prof. Upendra D Patil, Assistant Professor of Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, PHCET under IETE Students forum, one of the leading Professional Society in India, on 1st April, 2022.

    Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs – light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. The programmer can tell the board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so Arduino programming language and Arduino Software (IDE) is used. Over the years Arduino has been the brain of thousands of projects, from everyday objects to complex scientific instruments. A worldwide community of makers – students, hobbyists, artists, programmers, and professionals – has gathered around this open-source platform, their contributions have added up to an incredible amount of accessible knowledge that can be of great help to novices and experts alike. Arduino has been used in thousands of different projects and applications. The Arduino software is easy-to-use for beginners, yet flexible enough for advanced users. It runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Teachers and students use it to build low-cost scientific instruments, to prove chemistry and physics principles, or to get started with programming and robotics. Arduino boards are relatively inexpensive compared to other microcontroller platforms. Hence Arduino board can be used in embedded systems design for prototyping microcontroller-based systems to save time and money.

    The second part of this session was conducted on 8th and 9th April, 2022

    A Seminar on “IoT: Recent Trends and Applications” was organized by the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering under the IETE student chapter on 31st March, 2022. Mr. Murali Anatha, Advisor of placement at Vidyalankar School of Information Technology and retired Associate Director of iGate, was the resource person invited for the Program. He is passionate about the latest technologies and focused on IoT as a consultant and trainer. He was associated with Mr. Sunder Vaidyanathan, Managing Director at Teleman Institute of Wireless Technologies Private Limited.

    The program started at 11.00 a.m. with the welcome address by Dr. Mansi Subhedar, Head of the department. The opening remark was given by Dr. J. W. Bakal, Principal, PHCET. Mr. Murali Anatha gave a very informative talk on IoT, its architecture, and applications. He covered almost all the topics from the basic level to the emerging technologies in IoT. The topic was explained very precisely and students also found it very interesting. Mr. Sundar Vaidyanathan highlighted different job opportunities for Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and motivated students to be a continuous learner to become successful in their careers.

    Students and Faculty interacted with the speaker and cleared their doubts. 60 + students from EXTC and the Electrical department attended the seminar. The session ended with a vote of thanks to the guest by Dr. Mansi Subhedar.

    The Department of Electrical Engineering conducted a workshop for final year and third year students on 31st March, 2022 under IEI student Chapter. The separate session is also arranged for non-teaching staff. The primary goal of this workshop is to get practical understanding of industrial switchgear choices, motor protection equipment, single line diagrams and power and control circuit wiring diagrams for DOL/Star-Delta starters used in industries.

    The workshop started at 10 a.m. The speaker began with a detailed theory session in which he presented the DOL and Star – Delta wiring diagrams in depth as well as component technical specifications. The session then proceeds to a machine lab for a practical demonstration of starter wiring. Students are shown detailed wiring connections in accordance with the control and power circuit wiring diagram. The starter’s performance was then put to the test on a real 5 HP induction motor, with detailed demonstrations of starting and thermal protection of the motor when it was overloaded. The students learned how to connect the starter and how to pick various components such as contactors, thermal relays and MCBs based on the application.Total 67 students and 9 teaching faculty have attended the workshop. Also 6 non-teaching technical staff have attended the session.

    Prof. Pranita Chavan and Prof. R. D. More along with speaker took the efforts batch wise for successful conduction of the workshop. Students were overjoyed and acquired valuable experience in the design, wiring and implementation of motor starters.

    The Department of Computer Engineering organized a Hands-on Workshop on “Digital Forensics” for students of the computer department. The program started with a warm welcome of Mr. Gaurav Sharma. After the warm welcome, Mr. Gaurav Sharma conducted the workshop and students performed the activities by downloading, installing, and using various free forensics tools.

    Speaker Profile:
    Ms. Ruchira Patole, currently working as an Assistant Professor in Electronics Engineering Department of Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel. She is also pursuing her P.HD in the same area of expertise (IOT and Aurduino) from NIT, Surathkal. She has completed her Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from PillaiColleg of Engineering, Panvel (Mumbai University) with distinction. She has more than 10 years of experience in teaching. She has published a book chapter in Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020, indexed by SCOPUS. She has also published papers in National and International journals. She has also conducted many workshops for faculties and students. She is also a coordinator for conducting workshops in collage held by IIT Bombay.

    Workshop:
    The session started with the felicitation of speaker by our Head of the Department Prof. Pranita Chavan mam. Ruchira mam started with the introduction of IOT. She explained the role that Arduino plays in this particular technology. She gave information about the types of Arduinos available in the market and how students can utilise them into their projects. She has also shown them the working model and parts of drone using Arduino. She also highlighted the costing analysis for final year projects using Arduino kit. She gave a brief overview of useful softwares used for the resultant product. Students were motivated to utilize their time in studying and hands on training for Arduino Workshop. Speaker highlighted the key points to be considered while making patent filing project. Aditya Fundekar and Ritika Rai, students from TE Electrical, asked queries about costing and software and the speaker gave satisfactory answers to all the queries. Students thoroughly enjoyed the session and speaker made sure that all their concepts must be cleared.

    The speaker for this workshop is Dr. Yogita Mistry, Associate Professor at RAIT Nerul. eSim is a free and open-source EDA tool for circuit design, simulation, analysis, and PCB design.

    eSim offers similar capabilities and ease of use as any equivalent proprietary software for schematic creation, simulation, and PCB design, without having to pay a huge amount of money to procure licenses. Hence, it can be an affordable alternative to educational institutions and SMEs. It can serve as an alternative to commercially available/licensed software tools like OrCAD, Xpedition, and HSPICE.
