Workshop on “Free Online Software – Autodesk Tinkercad”

A Webinar on “Free Online Software – Autodesk Tinkercad” was organised by department of electronics and telecommunication engineering for S.E., T.E. and B.E. students on 30th October, 2020. Mr. Manoj Kavedia, Assistant Professor Thadomal Shahani College of Engineering was invited as guest speaker for this session.

The objective of this seminar was to motivate the students to use online software to work on PBL, mini projects & final year projects. In the pandemic due to COVID 19, open source simulation software can be really of help for all students for continued learning.

Dept. IETE Coordinator Mr. Pratik Mhatre introduced the guest. The speaker explained the basics of circuit implementation using Arduino, Sensors and other electronics components. The QA part of the session was really fruitful as students took part actively and cleared their queries. Session ended with vote of thanks by Head of the Department, Dr. Mansi Subhedar.

Session feedback submitted by all the students has confirmed the effectiveness of the session.

Intercollegiate Virtual Debate Competition on “Green Buildings – The Necessity of Tomorrow or Extravagance”
Debate is one of the academic activities that give students creative room to express what they feel. The length and breadth of knowledge that they gain through this is simply unparalleled. Department of Civil Engineering along with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) student’s chapter conducted an Intercollegiate Virtual Debate Competition on 18th October, 2020 at 2.30 p.m. The topic of the debate was “Green Buildings – The Necessity of Tomorrow or Extravagance”. Total 22 participants from Ghaziabad, Chennai, Amravti, Sangli, Pune, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai actively participated in this competition.

Welcome address was proposed Dr. T. J. Mathew Principal, Pillai HOC College of Engineering and Technology, Rasayani and he emphasized the urge of the concept to achieve the goal of sustainability. Both the teams exhibited great oratory skill. The competition was an enthralling experience for the speakers as well as the audience. Every debater was cheered and clapped up for their pleasing presentation and sharp arguments. Winning and losing is the part and parcel of the game, team ‘Ramanujam’ emerged as the winner for being defensive about their objective and also for sticking to their points till the end.

Intercollegiate Virtual Poster Making Competition on “Future of Sustainable Construction Industry Post the COVID-19 Pandemic”
Department of Civil Engineering along with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) student’s chapter conducted an Intercollegiate Virtual Poster Making Competition on 18th October, 2020 at 4.30 p.m. Students were asked to express their ideas through sketches or digital graphical illustration. The aim behind conducting this competition was to check the creative and artistic skills of the students. Total 26 participants from Philippines, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Delhi and Maharashtra actively participated in this competition.

In this pandemic situation, our department has organized an Online Webinar on “How to Become Effective Product Manager” on 4th October, 2020. This Workshop was conducted by Mr. Jayesh Pashilkar, Application Analyst at Scripps Health, San Diego, California and Mr. Sunith Shetty, Product Manager, Packt Publishing, Mumbai. The webinar aimed at guiding the participants for enriching their knowledge in becoming effective Product Manager.

The students got detail information on

Awareness on “Organ Donation Webinar”

On 2nd October, (151st Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) the NSS Unit of Pillai HOC College Of Engineering and Technology organised a Organ Donation Webinar in association with VF Organs Foundation, which mainly focused on creating awareness among the youth regarding organ donation. The webinar was open to all the students of the institute.

Mr. Shreekant Apte, Member of Maharashtra State Level Authorization was the keynote speaker, he has immense experience in this field and is himself working for past few years. Also Mr. Sudhir Puranik, Director of Mumbai University NSS Cell, was the Guest of Honour. The webinar was hosted by Mrs. Rekha Dhawan and Mr. Avinash Gatade, coordinator of NSS Cell, PHCET.

The session took place from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and another half hour for questions. The session was interactive, participants asked many doubts which were resolved by Shreekant Sir. Some of the feedback received by participants-

He is the wellspring of knowledge, with over 25 years of experience in the field of energy conservation in building solar heating cooling system and combined power. Holds a PhD in Solar cooling from IIT Madras.

The discussion summarizes recent research on improving AC efficiency with solar energy. They include absorption, evaporation, and desiccant plants (advanced AC plants). This chapter describes their technology and parts. It also examines the use of solar energy for air cooling, especially in rural areas where electricity is scarce, as well as lowering energy prices and pollution. At the end of the chapter, solar AC systems are compared to regular AC systems in terms of design, cost, and effectiveness.

Later on there was a small Q n A session for all the members to clear their doubts. As expected the speaker provided proper information about the subject which help the students to explore the solar air conditioning.

Workshop on “NPTEL & IIT Spoken Tutorial Courses”

Department of Electronics and Telecommunication organised Webinar on “NPTEL & IIT Spoken Tutorial Courses” on 11th September, 2020 under IETE student’s forum [ISF] for SE to BE EXTC students. 70 students participated in the workshop. It was conducted by Prof Pratik J Mhatre, Assistant Professor, EXTC Dept.

In this workshop, details of the registration process, links to online sessions and examination pattern were briefed. Students were also briefed about the benefits and details of open source online platforms.

Internship Position at the UXO

Dear Students,
The UXO is executing a project for a world resources institute and is recruiting interns. This work involves digitizing road networks of various cities in India. The work involves satellite image interpretation for creating digital road networks. Students from CS, Civil Engineering, Architecture and Mechanical fields are preferred.

This work can be done from home and all interested students are expected to have a good laptop and internet connection. Training will also be provided online. This is a paid internship opportunity with clear deliverables and timeframes. Students will be expected to adhere to the time frames and deadlines given by their supervisors.

Applicants also benefit from an effective interview, as it enables them to determine if their employment needs and interests would likely be met.

The presentation covered following areas:
- Arrive early. Fifteen to 20 minutes is sufficient.

Pillai HOC College of Engineering & Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering had successfully hosted an Online Webinar on “Diverse Applications of AI in Core Engineering” for students and faculty of PHCET which was a part of Popular Science Lecture Series. It was organised by Indian Women Scientists’ Association, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, supported by Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences-DAE.

Mr. Makarand Apte, Solidworks AI Development DIrector was invited as a resource person for the webinar. He is currently working in Dassault Systemes- la fondation. Mr. Makarand is has done B.Tech from IIT Bombay in Metallurigical Engineering & Material Science. He worked on various areas on Computational Geometry, Geometric Modelling, Advanced Surfacing, CAD data inter-operability, Mesh Compression-Decompression, Wall Thickness Analysis, Swept Volume Generation and Shrink Wrapping, AI based 3D design assistant tool for productivity boosting. He has also filed 3 patents in area of Artificial Intelligence(AI). He has also organised events like idea Crowdsourcing, Hackathons, Tech Talks.

Total 70 students and faculty have participated the session. The expert commenced the session with an introduction to Artificial Intelligence. The expert showed real life examples of generative design generated by using artificial intelligence. Then he showed prominent areas in Machine Learning. He showed then how AI can be used for predictive maintenance and industrial quality inspection. Then he showed Ai powered robots working in various fields like walking robots, manhole cleaning robot and AI with prosthetics. Then at the end he gave tips for students to help with AI projects.

The session ended with Question Answer session and vote of thanks. Feedback link was sent to the participants and E-Certificate was mailed to their mail ids. Positive feedback was received from participants and students suggested to organise more sessions like the same in the future.
