Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology of Pillai HOC College of Engineering and Technology organized One Week Faculty Development Program on “Data Science” under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission for Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), Government of India in association with Shivaji University, Kolhapur. It was scheduled from 1st to 7th July, 2019. This course provides comprehensive Data Science (Rubics) training for those who prefer to come up to speed on building Data Science capabilities. The prerequisites is the rapid pace of this class favors those who learn new concepts quickly, or have previous experience with Data Analysis along with basic knowledge of Statistics. Data Science is a blend of various tools, algorithms, and machine learning principles with the goal to discover hidden patterns from the raw data. Data Science is an interdisciplinary field, data science deals with processes and systems, that are used to extract knowledge or insights from large amounts of data. Data extracted can be either structured or unstructured. Data science is a continuation of data analysis fields like data mining, statistics, predictive analysis.

Course outcomes of FDP on Data Science are:

  • Participants will develop relevant programming abilities.
  • Participants will demonstrate proficiency with statistical analysis of data.
  • Participants will develop the ability to build and assess data-based models.
  • Participants will execute statistical analyses with professional statistical software.
  • Participants will demonstrate skill in various tools used for data science.
  • Participants will apply data science concepts and methods to solve problems in real-world contexts and will communicate these solutions effectively.

The Faculty Development Program on “Data Science” started with the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries Mr. Swapnil Jawahire, Dr. Madhumita Chatterjee, Dr. Mathew Joseph, Dr. Ashok Kanthe, Dr. J. Nalavade and HODs of other departments in Conclave. Dr. Madhumita Chatterjee (Principal, PHCET) welcomed all the participants for the FDP and gave the bouquet to the Swapnil Jawahire (Consultant Trainer, Inteliment Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Pune). Dr. Mathew Joseph made familiar to the participants the Need for Data Science as companies needs to use data to run and grow their everyday business thus the fundamental goal of data science help companies make quicker and better decisions, which can take them to the top of their market. Dr. Ashok Kanthe gave a brief description of the PMMMNMTT, Government of India initiative in association with Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Dr. J. Nalavade gave the introduction about Data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract and insights from structured and unstructured data.

Various topics were unfolded by the eminent speakers during this FDP. Following topics were covered with the hands-on sessions:

  2. Machine learning using Python
  3. Data Analytics using Python
  4. Hands-on session on Python
  5. Hands-on session on Machine Learning,
  6. Data Analytics

Online examination was conducted on the last day of FDP. After that, the certificate distribution ceremony was conducted. The top three scorers of the exam Ms. Smita Dange, Mr. Saurabh Sirsikar and Ms. Pooja Shukre felicitated and appreciated by dignitaries. Dr. Ashok Kanthe, Head, Computer Engineering department gave the vote of thanks and the event was concluded.
