Research and Consultancy

  • The required experimental setup was fabricated from local industrial resource
  • For the first time, innovative correlations for calculating Nusselt number in terms of M number, Prandtl number and coil curvature ratio are developed based on experimental heat transfer data generated from four helical coils under isothermal steady state and non-isothermal unsteady state conditions. Several other useful heat transfer correlations for design of helical coil heat exchanger are also developed.
  • Correlations for friction factor are developed for non-Newtonian fluids under isothermal steady state conditions
  • In all, 327 experiments were conducted using Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids under various temperature conditions covering laminar to turbulent flow regimes in helical coils
  • All the developed heat transfer and friction factor correlations were validated with the work of earlier investigators
  • Hypothesis testing of Nu vs. M, innovative heat transfer correlations was carried out experimentally for Newtonian as well as for non-Newtonian fluids under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions successfully and hence, use of M number is recommended with full confidence for characterization of hydrodynamics of fluid flow and heat transfer in helical coils for any practical coil curvature ratios and any type of fluids
  • Experimental results were compared with the correlations available for straight tube and helical duct of rectangular cross section
  • Experimental measurements and heat transfer results were validated with the CFD results in laminar to turbulent flow regions under various conditions. Also physics of flow pattern in helical coil for various values of M number were studied to characterize the hydrodynamic of fluid flow using CFD tool.
  • Worked as a technical consultant in 2007 for "Kilburn Engineering Limited", Bhandup, Mumbai. The nature of consultancy work was: The design solutions for eccentric shaft, leaf spring, bolts, pin and connecting rod with its bolts for "Vibratory Screen Feeder" used in sugar industry were provided. The frequent failure of these parts was observed during operation whereas new design solutions provided are satisfactorily implemented and it is working successfully.
